24 Hours in NYC: Chinatown, Little Italy, & Soho

New York City is a playground of endless possibilities, but if you only have 24 hours and want to experience an alternative to Midtown – I've got you covered. The following itinerary is my version of a perfect day in New York City discovering hidden gems in and around: Chinatown, Little Italy, and Soho. Lace up your walking shoes and loosen your belts as we explore secret spots, mouth-watering eats, and unforgettable experiences in New York City.

A Brief History of Three Iconic Neighborhoods

Chinatown, Little Italy, and Soho are three of NYC's most vibrant and historically rich neighborhoods, each with its unique charm and character.

Chinatown blossomed in the late 19th century, becoming a bustling enclave for Chinese immigrants. Today Chinatown stands as a vibrant hub of culture, cuisine, and commerce, where traditional markets and modern businesses coexist.

Little Italy, famous for its narrow streets and authentic Italian eateries, was once the heart of New York's Italian immigrant community. Though it's now more of a cultural landmark, it still retains the old-world charm with annual feasts like the San Gennaro Festival.

Soho, short for "South of Houston Street," transformed from an industrial area with cast-iron buildings into a trendy district renowned for its upscale boutiques, art galleries, and cobblestone streets. Together, these neighborhoods offer a rich tapestry of history, culture, and experiences that capture the essence of New York City.

Save this itinerary for your next trip to NYC. Whether you've visited before or it's your first time, the following itinerary is sure to surprise and delight the senses.

Now to the good stuff.

9:00 AM – Breakfast at Ferrara Bakery

Kick off your day in Little Italy with a visit to Ferrara Bakery. This iconic spot has been serving delectable pastries since 1892. Grab a cannoli and a cappuccino, and savor the authentic flavors while watching the neighborhood wake up.

10:30 AM – Explore Chinatown

Stroll over to Columbus Park to witness locals practicing tai chi or engaging in a heated game of mahjong. This park is a slice of serenity amidst the urban hustle. Next, head to Doyers Street – a curved alleyway steeped in history, once known as the "Bloody Angle" for its gang wars. Today, it’s home to unique shops and speakeasies.

12:00 PM – Dim Sum at Wo Hop

No visit to Chinatown is complete without a meal at Wo Hop. Descend the stairs to this basement eatery and prepare for a feast. Their dim sum is legendary, and the vibe is distinctly local. Try the pork dumplings and the beef chow fun – you won’t be disappointed.

2:00 PM – Soho Shopping Spree

Soho is a shopper's paradise, but beyond the big-name brands are hidden boutiques that offer one-of-a-kind finds. Check out KIRNA ZABETE for high-end fashion, or WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND for iconic vintage finds. Wander the cobblestone streets and let your curiosity guide you.

4:00 PM – People Watch in Washington Square Park

This iconic park in Greenwich Village is a short walk from Soho and a great place to reflect and recharge before dinner. Find a bench near the fountain, enjoy some people-watching, and soak in the vibrant energy of the city. It's a peaceful yet lively spot that offers a nice contrast to the shopping frenzy of Soho.

6:00 PM – Dinner at Peasant

For an Old World Italian dining experience that feels like a local secret, make your way to Peasant in the charming neighborhood of NoLiTa short for "North of Little Italy," between Soho and Little Italy on Elizabeth Street. This rustic restaurant captures the essence of an Italian farmhouse with its candlelit ambiance, exposed brick walls, and a wood-burning oven. Indulge in wood-fired dishes like roast suckling pig and homemade pastas such as pappardelle with wild boar ragu. It’s a favorite among New Yorkers in the know, offering an authentic taste of Italy with a modern twist.

8:00 PM – Off-Broadway Theater: The Public Theater

Experience NYC’s vibrant theater scene without the Broadway prices at The Public Theater in NoHo. Known for its innovative productions, this off-Broadway venue is where shows like Hamilton got their start. Check the schedule in advance and book your tickets for an unforgettable night.

10:30 PM – Secret Speakeasy: The Back Room

Hidden behind a toy shop façade, The Back Room is a genuine Prohibition-era speakeasy. Sip on cocktails served in teacups, a nod to the clandestine drinking days of the 1920s. The entrance is tricky to find, but that’s part of the fun! Open every day at 6 pm. You must be 25 years or older on Fridays and Saturdays—be prepared to show I.D.

The Back Room, NYC

1 AM – Final Nightcap at Apotheke

Embrace the city that doesn't sleep with a final nightcap at Apotheke, a speakeasy-style cocktail bar in Chinatown. Located in a former opium den, the entrance is discreet, but once inside, you’re transported to a bygone era. The cocktails are crafted with medicinal precision, and the ambiance is nothing short of magical.
