Embracing Solo Travel for Self-Care

Ladies, have you ever felt the urge to escape, recharge, and rediscover yourself, away from the demands of daily life? Alone? If so, you’re not alone. Solo travel for self-care is becoming a cherished trend, especially among women aged 25-44, including busy moms and professionals. We're not just talking yoga retreats (though if that's your jam, lean into it) and it's not just about seeing new places (although that can be very fulfilling)—it’s about reconnecting with the best version of yourself to bring back and apply to your daily life. Sounds pretty good, right? Even, let's say, a little easier said than done.

The Importance of Self-Care for Women

In our fast-paced world, self-care often takes a backseat, especially for women—even more for those of us juggling multiple roles, which let's be honest, what woman do you know who isn't? Whether you're managing a career, a household, or just navigating the obstacles of life, it’s easy to neglect your own needs. But self-care is crucial—it’s not just a luxury but a necessity for maintaining optimal mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Basically to continue to be the best version of yourself.

Solo travel offers a unique opportunity to focus only on yourself. It provides the space to unwind, reflect, and rejuvenate without distractions. Imagine waking up to the sound of ocean waves from your hotel room, exploring the side streets of a new city at your own pace, or simply enjoying a quiet meal while journaling your thoughts. Solo travel helps you reconnect with yourself in ways that everyday routines rarely allow.

But here's the rub—you have to prioritize the time. No one will give it to you. Everyone will make you feel like the world will simply stop on its axis if you stop doing or delegate, X, Y, or Z for two days or (gasp!) a week! You must be selfish to be your best self. I know for many if not most of you reading this, that may be counterintuitive to how you operate or were raised but it's time we re-write our narratives. Let's take a playbook from the men.

Practical Tips for Planning Your Solo Reset

Destination Selection

Choose a destination that resonates with your interests and comfort level. Whether it’s a bustling city or a tranquil countryside, ensure it’s a place you feel excited and safe to explore alone. Don't discount the value of visiting a nearby town or indulging in a staycation. How many of us move to a city or region excited to enjoy all it has to offer and then stop exploring when we get into the routine of work/life? If you're looking for recommendations on hotels or things to do, sites like Trip Advisor can be a trusted place to start.

Budgeting

Planning your budget is essential. Consider all aspects, from flights and accommodation to meals and activities. Keep an emergency fund for unexpected expenses. Researching affordable yet comfortable accommodations on platforms like Trivago can help you compare and manage costs. There are loads of cost-saving apps out there where you can maximize your money and time because both are extremely valuable!

Activity Considerations

Don't be afraid to be a tourist in your hometown. You don't have to travel far to get away. Whether you're looking for relaxation, adventure, or cultural submersion, there are many resources to support your activity goals. Apps and websites like Go City or Get Your Guide offer fantastic options for solo travelers looking for tours and activities that make exploring new places more accessible (and affordable). Remember, going solo doesn't mean going broke or being alone.

Packing Essentials

While your destination and level of activity will impact how you pack, above all else, pack light and smart. Think lightweight and wrinkle-free. Two of my favorite travel brands (both B Corp Certified) that cover just about any packing itinerary I can conceive  (including actual packs) are Athleta and Cotopaxi. I love shopping their sales and finding amazing deals!

Include essentials like:

  • a first-aid kit (including any essential medicines you may need on hand)

  • comfortable walking shoes (try to limit shoes to 2-3 max—one for activity, one more dressy, and maybe a pair of sandals)

  • a reusable water bottle

  • a good book (digital offers way more storage and options—yes, audio counts!)

Lastly, don’t forget to pack items that bring you comfort, whether it's a favorite snack or a cozy scarf.

A note on safety - Whether you're new to traveling solo or this is already part of your wellness routine, make sure to share your itinerary with someone you trust and have copies of important documents accessible (printed or in cloud storage), especially if you're traveling internationally. Trust your instincts—if something doesn’t feel right, leave.

Overcoming the Fear of Solo Travel

It’s natural to feel apprehensive about solo travel, especially if the idea of doing things alone feels intimidating. Start small—gradually build your confidence by engaging in solo activities like dining out or attending events alone. Remember, solo travel is a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. Each step you take will build your confidence and open up new possibilities. Solo travel for self-care is a powerful way to nurture yourself and increase self-empowerment, making you a formidable powerhouse in your daily life!
