Let’s be real—air travel can be a test of endurance. Between cramped seats, fluctuating cabin temperatures, and the constant battle against jet lag, it’s easy to feel like you’re just surviving the flight rather than enjoying the journey. After countless flights, from short domestic hops to long-haul international journeys, I’ve curated a list of essential travel accessories that have become my in-flight survival kit. These essentials don’t just make the journey bearable—they make it enjoyable.

1. Adjustable Head Strap: The Ultimate In-Flight Sleep Hack

You’ve seen it happen to other passengers—and maybe you’ve even been there yourself: the dreaded head bob. Just as you’re drifting off, your head jerks forward, snapping you awake. That’s where a head strap like the Seat Sleeper Adjustable Head Strap comes in. This compact, packable device secures your head to the seat, preventing any awkward bobbing. I even relax into it while watching a long movie on flights, just to give me the option to nod on and off without worrying about my head lolling around.

Sleep game changer!

The best part? It’s versatile. When not in use as a head strap, it can double as an eye mask, blocking out unwanted light. Its compact design also means it takes up minimal space in your carry-on—perfect for those who like to travel light. This is definitely one of my top essential travel accessories for a comfortable flight (and long road trips in the car)!

2. Full Head-Wrapping Silk Eye Mask: The Key to Complete Darkness and Quiet

For those moments when you just need to shut the world out, nothing beats a full head-wrapping Silk Sleep Mask. This isn’t your average eye mask. It’s designed to wrap around your entire head, covering not just your eyes but your ears as well. The result? A soft, luxurious cocoon that blocks out all light and muffles sound. The silk material is gentle on your skin and hair, making it comfortable for long-term wear. While your head sling can double as an eye mask, I travel with both because I find it hard to sleep in new spaces, especially when there is a lot of ambient light.

I will use the silk eye mask in conjunction with my head sling during flights, though the silk material is a little slippery and will require some adjusting to make everything stay where you want it to. Regardless, whether you’re trying to catch some sleep during a red-eye or want to block out ambient light in your hotel room, a full head-wrapping silk eye mask is an absolute game-changer and a must-have among my essential travel accessories. Plus they're sexy-AF as you can see below. **insert laughing/crying emoji**

3. Noise-Canceling Headphones and Loops: Your Personal Sound Bubble

Airplanes are noisy—there’s no getting around that. Between the hum of the engines, the chatter of passengers, and the announcements over the PA system, it can be hard to find a moment of peace. That’s why a noise-canceling option is a must-have essential travel accessory when I travel. They create a personal sound bubble that allows me to block out unwanted noise and focus on what I want to hear (or not hear), whether that’s my favorite playlist, an engaging podcast, or the in-flight movie.

This is an ad for Loops earplugs with a woman’s profile image wearing a small loop gauge in her ear and a black turtle neck. Her hair is a light auburn brown.

I travel with both noise-canceling headphones (usually AirPods but also over-the-head Bose) and Loops. If you've read any of my previous articles, I rave about Loops and always keep a pair on my person (in my coin purse) at all times. I find Loops are great not only for reading or trying to sleep but also for everyday wear when you just want to turn the volume on the world around you, down a little bit. Loops are earplugs with a sleek design that look like gauges and come in different variations, from soft silicone versions perfect for sleeping to a three-in-one option that caters to everything in between. They’re comfortable and discreet, and do a fantastic job of dampening noise without completely isolating you from your surroundings.

4. Portable Charger: Staying Powered Up Without the Hassle

In our digital age, staying connected is crucial, even at 30,000 feet. But with limited outlets on planes and long layovers at airports, keeping your devices charged can be a challenge. That’s why I always travel with a portable charger, a key essential travel accessory. I’m partial to cordless options like a MagSafe Portale Charger with a kickstand. Not only does it free me from the hunt for an outlet, but it also doubles as a phone stand—perfect for hands-free viewing. Whether I’m catching up on work, watching a movie, or just need to recharge my AirPods between movies, I never have to worry about running out of battery mid-flight.

5. Refillable Water Bottle: Hydration Without the Bulk

this picture is of two utilitarian urban backpacks with multiple pockets. One is olive green with an orange water bottle in it’s side pocket. THe other is a black backpack. A passport with tickets sits on the table in front.
Makes sure your water bottle fits in a side pocket.

Staying hydrated during a flight is essential, but let’s face it—those tiny cups of water the flight attendants hand out just don’t cut it. I used to carry a Nalgene, but I found it too bulky to fit in the side pocket of my daypacks, leaving me to dangle it from a carabiner (something you may see other backpackers do- almost like a right of passage). Now, I opt for a slim, refillable water bottle that fits snugly in my bag. For long flights, attendants will happily fill your water bottle upon request (which is also why I now select aisle seats on long flights so I can stay hydrated and get up and pee frequently).

My everyday option is the Camelbak 32oz vacuum insulated mag chut which also has a magnetic cap that's large enough for me to chug but not so open that I wear half of what I'm trying to drink. However, for trekking off the beaten path or where the water is less safe to drink, I bring my Grayl GeoPress 24oz water purification bottle.

Both are easy to refill at airport water stations, fit in my pack side pockets, and ensure I always have water on hand without taking up too much space. A refillable water bottle is one of those essential travel accessories that I won’t board a flight without.

Travel Tip: You can bring any water bottle through airport security so long as it's empty when it goes through the screening. I always uncap my bottle and show the security attendant it's empty before placing it in my bin. There are almost always water filling stations immediately available after passing through security. Plus it's much cheaper than purchasing $6+ bottles at the snacks shop.

6. A Sandwich: The Secret Weapon for Hunger

If you’ve ever been stuck on a flight with nothing but pretzels or peanuts to tide you over, you’ll understand why I always pack a sandwich. While many international flights still offer substantial meals (many of my best in-flight meals have been on Asian flights), domestic U.S. flights often charge extra, leaving you hungry if you don’t want to pay for a subpar snack box. Packing a sandwich ensures you have something filling and satisfying, especially on long flights, early morning departures, long layovers, or when your body clock is out of sync due to time zone changes. Plus sandwiches generally aren't very smelly so won't offend those sitting around you with a pungent or lingering scent. I've been on flights where people bring in very scented snacks, like sauerkraut or curry (yes, for real)

Travel Tip: Avoid wet toppings that could make your sandwich soggy or messy. Stick to simple, dry ingredients that will hold up during the flight. This is one of those essential travel accessories that can save your trip.

7. Packable Down Jacket: Warmth and Versatility

Airplane cabins are notorious for their unpredictable temperatures. One minute you’re sweating through takeoff, and the next, you’re shivering under the air vent. That’s why I never board a plane without a packable down jacket. It’s lightweight, easy to stow in your carry-on, and provides instant warmth when the cabin gets chilly, especially on overnight flights. Plus, they're versatile and can double as a pillow against the window (though the head sling has replaced this for me) or lumbar support when packed tightly, making it an invaluable addition to your essential travel accessories.

8. Extra Set of Warm Socks: Cozy Comfort for Long Flights

There’s something about a pair of warm, fuzzy socks that makes you feel at home, even when you’re thousands of miles away. On long flights, I like to kick off my shoes and slip into a pair of cozy socks. They keep my feet warm, help me relax, and add a layer of comfort that’s crucial when you’re trying to catch some sleep. Plus, they’re easy to pack and take up virtually no space in your bag, making them a no-brainer addition to your list of essential travel accessories.

9. Slide Sandals or Laceless Boots: Easy On, Easy Off

Navigating airport security can be a hassle, especially when you have to untie and retie your shoes. That’s why I always opt for easy-on, easy-off footwear. If I’m heading to a warm destination, I’ll wear slide sandals like Bombas, which are perfect for slipping on and off in a hurry. For cooler climates, laceless boots like Blundstones are my go-to—they’re stylish, comfortable, and just as convenient, especially in snow or rain. Another bonus? I don’t have to worry about stepping into the airplane bathroom barefoot. Because, let’s be honest, that’s a situation no one wants to find themselves in. Easy on-and-off footwear is definitely an essential travel accessory for any trip.

10. Offline Entertainment: In-Flight Fun Without WiFi

Last but certainly not least, I always make sure to download all my entertainment (to be available offline) before boarding. Whether it’s music, podcasts, e-books, or audiobooks, having everything available offline is a lifesaver when you’re in airplane mode. It’s the perfect way to pass the time, whether you’re winding down with a good book or zoning out to your favorite playlist. The best part? No need to rely on spotty in-flight WiFi or worry about running out of things to do during a long-haul flight. For me, this is one of the most essential travel accessories to ensure an enjoyable flight.

11. Subtl Staks Stackable Makeup: Compact Beauty for On-the-Go

I never used to travel with much makeup. A tinted moisturizer and mascara were my go-to makeup essentials for the longest time. That was before I found Subtl Staks. This product has not only changed my travel makeup packing problems but I use my Subtle Stak in my daily makeup routine at home. These cleverly designed, stackable (and refillable) pods allow you to carry all your makeup essentials—like concealer (that doubles as a foundation), bronzer, cream lip/blush, cream highlighter, and duo eye color—in one compact, space-saving tower.

The modular design means you can customize your stack with exactly what you need, making it perfect for quick touch-ups during layovers or after a long flight. Subtl Staks are not only convenient and lightweight, but they also take up minimal space in your carry-on, keeping your beauty routine effortless and streamlined, even on the go. Whether you travel for work or play, I can't recommend this essential travel accessory enough!

A fun fact that I hope is true: Subtl Staks were called "Ho on the Go" originally.
